Walking Tips ~
  • Appropriate attire for exercising is important.  We recommend loose, comfortable clothing such as sweat suits or shorts.  Layer your upper body so that garments can be removed as you become warm.  Good shoes are VITAL.  We recommend a walking shoe.  There are several brands on the market.
  • Water is available throughout the program. We encourage you to drink some periodically while you walk.  Replenishing fluids is important to prevent dehydration.
  • When you begin your laps, start out slow to warm-up your muscles.  As you progress, increase your speed and stride.  Continue at this pace until tired, then slow down and finish with a slow steady lap.  This will allow your heart rate to drop gradually, and prevent dizziness.
  • Stretching is important to prevent muscle soreness and tightness, and should be completed at the end of the walking session when muscles are warm.  Stretching cold muscles can cause muscle pulls and is not recommended.  Important muscles to stretch for walkers are the calf, thigh, and hamstring (back of thigh); however, we recommend a total stretching program for all of the major muscles to maintain your mobility within those joints. Program staff can demonstrate these to you.  Just ask.
